Biography

Edwin (“Ed”) Anthony

Born:  1967, Little Rock, Arkansas

Education: Marketing Degree from the University of Arkansas

I have always believed in putting my money where my mouth is.  Thus, I am not a bystander in the horse business, but an active participant, out in the trenches with the rest of you.  My wife and I bred multiple stakes winner Your Bluffing ($500,000+ in earnings, 16 wins).  In 2006, we campaigned the stakes winner Skeleton Crew and the allowance winner Bullion.  We currently have 3 horses in training--Bees Wax (Quiet American filly), Campout (Forestry filly), and Wah Mei (Vindication filly), as well as 2 broodmares.  I fully understand the challenge of breeding a stakes winner and the costs involved in operating a racing stable.

I recently published my second pedigree book, The American Thoroughbred.  Eventually, I hope to follow up this reference work with a second volume.  You never really run out of pedigree topics to discuss, and the minute that you stop researching pedigrees, is the minute that you stop learning.

Work Experience—

1991 - 1993:  Racing Update columnist (“Ed’s Choice”) and research assistant to Bill Oppenheim, Lexington, Kentucky.  Co-edited the popular Sire Handbook and assisted in stallion recommendations (“matings”)—one of which resulted in champion Prairie Bayou (Preakness, Blue Grass, Jim Beam, etc.).

1993 - 1995:  Traffic Manager for Anthony Timberlands, Inc., Beirne, Arkansas.

1995 - 1998:  After relocating to Central Kentucky, penned 35 pedigree research articles for a variety of industry publications, including The Blood-Horse (wrote the editorial column “The Final Turn” twice), MarketWatch (helped to launch this award-winning newsletter by writing feature articles), and Owner-Breeder.

1997:  Published The 21st Century Pedigree Handbook (A Comprehensive Guide to Thoroughbred Pedigrees), which was distributed by The Blood-Horse, Joseph-Beth Booksellers, and the Russell Meerdink Company.  The book is no longer available, as all copies were sold within the first year.

1998 - 2004:  Full-time pedigree consultant at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Kentucky.  So far, matings work from time spent there has resulted in the G1 winners High Fly (Florida Derby), Siren Lure (Triple Bend Handicap), Point Ashley (Del Mar Debutante), & Nobiz Like Shobiz (Wood Memorial), as well as the Gulfstream track record setter and G2 winner Medallist (new stakes record in winning the G2 Dwyer).

1989 - present:  Additional matings work has resulted in such notable runners as Aztec Hill (G2 2x), Belle of Perintown (G2), Clark Street (G2), Eight Belles(G2), Flitch (G2), Lil’s Lad (G2, 2nd G1 2x), and the G1-placed runners Ocean Breeze and Point Determined (G3).
